The Parole Project is excited to announce that it has partnered with the Frederick Douglass Project for Justice for a new flagship prison visitation program that brings together everyday Americans and incarcerated people at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in St. Gabriel, Louisiana to recognize the humanity in each other. Formally launched in 2020, the Frederick Douglass Project for Justice embodies the values and legacy of the great 19th century champion of education through their focus on emancipation, equality, and justice. Since its inception in December 2022, the Project has had over 60 volunteers who have entered Hunt Correctional Center and have had life changing experiences. The incarcerated men participating in this program have also expressed overwhelming inspiration and motivation to continue in their quest for rehabilitation and redemption.

The Parole Project believes that better policy and an improved public perception of the criminal justice system can be created when lawmakers, business leaders, and everyday Americans become proximate with the humanity of incarcerated people. Since partnering, the Parole Project has been conducting structured meetings and respectful conversations between the two groups, and they have learned from each other, formed powerful human connections, transforming both their own lives and society at large. These unique encounters have spurred understanding and empathy-for both visitors and those incarcerated-that have, in turn, created meaningful personal and systemic change.

Parole Project is seeking your assistance to help us seek out others to experience this program’s powerful impact. Large groups of up to 20 people are accepted and welcome, as well as individuals interested in this worthwhile cause. Visits are being held twice monthly on Fridays from 12:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. If you would like to participate in this program, please fill out the following forms and send them to Matthew Pineda at or Christi Cheramie at
