LSU Law’s PILS, the Louisiana Survivors for Reform (LSR), and LSU’s Tigers Against Sexual Assault (TASA) teamed up to host “Justice for Survivors: A Panel of Criminalized Survivors of Abuse and Victims’ Loved Ones.” The event discussed the Justice for Survivors Act, and attendees heard from criminalized survivors of abuse and victims’ loved ones. The event was held on Tuesday, February 28th from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in Room 110 of the LSU Law Center. Panelists include: Nailah Starks (daughter of an incarcerated survivor), Beasy Taylor (advocate and former criminalized survivor), Sandra Starr (advocate for incarcerated women and survivor of domestic violence, and Theolonious Champagne (domestic violence advocate).

More about Louisiana Survivors for Reform: “The dynamics of human trafficking, intimate partner violence, and sexual abuse are not adequately accounted for in the Louisiana legal system. As a result of these misconceptions, survivors are criminalized for defending themselves against an abuser or being coerced to participate in a crime under extreme duress. It is estimated there are between 30 and 50 survivors currently serving life sentences in Louisiana for participating in actions as a direct result of abuse. That’s why we’re bringing the Justice for Survivors Act to the 2023 legislative session: To ensure survivors receive care, healing, and support, not lengthy prison sentences.”
