LSU and the Lyon LL.M. in International and European Business Law

Professor Olivier Moréteau taught an intensive Comparative Tort Law class the week of Thanksgiving, in the LLM in International and European Business Law at Université Jean Moulin, Lyon, France.

He met with Christopher (Chris) Sidebottom, LSU JD/DCL 2014, who took his class. Chris attended part of the program last spring as an exchange student, graduated at LSU, passed the Illinois Bar, and registered on his own in the Lyon Program to earn the LLM.

LSU Law students can indeed have a ‘semester abroad’ experience in Lyon, attending one semester of the program and transferring credits towards their JD/DCL at LSU. LLM credits are capitalized in Lyon where LSU Law graduates can return on their own to complete another semester and earn the Lyon LLM. Chris Sidebottom is not the first student to do this and fully benefit from a truly international environment with students and faculty from all continents. 2L Elisa Samaniego is due to spend a semester in Lyon next spring.

Dictionary of the Civil Code

The Dictionary of the Civil Code, an English translation of more than 1600 entries selected from the Vocabulaire Juridique of Gérard Cornu under the auspices of the Association Henri Capitant des amis de la culture juridique française, introduces to readers, jurists or not, the essential concepts of the French Civil Code. Key to an understanding of the civil law through its terminology as translated and explained in English, the definitions are enriched with references made to the Civil Code of Louisiana.
This work of reference on the French legal and civil law culture is an essential tool for comparatists, civilians, jurilinguists and translators.

U.S. Department of Justice and LSU Perspectives on Transnational Crime

Dan E. Stigall, Coordinator for International Security Affairs at the U.S. Department of Justice, gave an outstanding presentation on the challenges that face sovereign states in relation to the rise of transnational crimes in an increasingly globalized world.

This presentation gave LSU Law students the opportunity to better understand the basic principles of International Law established by the Treaty of Westphalia (1648), such as sovereignty and non-intervention, and what they mean in the context of cyber criminality: they are limiting law enforcement action on crimes that have become increasingly mobile and transnational.

Mr. Stigall also briefly discussed the differences between the law of armed conflict and law enforcement action, as well as the distinction between transnational crimes, which transcend national frontiers, and international crimes, which are punishable by International Courts such as genocide, war crimes and so on. He commented on the principal tools against transnational crimes handled by central authorities: mutual legal assistance and extradition.

Mr. Stigall insisted on the unique advantage derived from his LSU legal education when communicating with his foreign counterparts, especially in civil law countries. He praised the uniqueness of LSU, “making you a comparativist,” “enabling you to understand your counterpart” and to communicate and collaborate effectively. He featured the “Systems” class, today Western Legal Traditions and Systems, as the most significant and useful class in the curriculum.

He then focused on employment opportunities in the field of International Law, particularly with the Departments of State, Justice, Commerce, and federal agencies in general. He emphasized the importance of being a comparative lawyer and strongly encouraged the students to seize any opportunity to speak another language and to seek international experience. His speech was well-received among the audience.

Honoring LLMs Past and Present, Including Prof. Pascal, now in his 100th Year

On Wednesday, October 1st 2014, the Center of Civil Law Studies hosted its annual Wine and Cheese Reception to welcome the new LL.M. class of 2014–2015 and introduce them to faculty members,  former LL.M.s, student-members of the International Law Society, Graduate Editors of the Journal of Civil Law Studies, LSU staff members, and representatives of supporting organizations.

This year was a very special event, honoring LSU’s first and oldest Master’s program graduate, Professor Emeritus Robert Pascal, now in his 100th year, who received a M.C.L. (Master in Civil Law) 75 years ago.

Professor Olivier Moréteau congratulated him for over 75 years of diligent and productive study of the civil law and comparative law. Prof. Pascal published his first article in the Louisiana Law Review, volume 1, in 1938, and his latest in volume 70, in 2008. Some of his best articles can be read in Robert Anthony Pascal: A Priest of Right Order (O. Moreteau, ed. 2010), which includes a so-far unpublished Recollection of a Life Studying and Teaching Law. He taught several generations of law students in Baton Rouge, Rome and Paris, until his retirement in 1980. Participants, including LL.M.s of more recent years, expressed their love and admiration.

This was a great occasion for present LL.M. candidates to meet interesting people and to discuss further their background around a glass of wine, escaping the rigors of the academic program for a couple of hours.

The LL.M. team would like to thank faculty members, staff, and students who attended the event.

Uisdean “Hugh” Vass, LL.M., LSU 1985, Presents on the Ramifications of the Scottish Independence Referendum

Hugh Vass, a Scottish lawyer who graduated with an LL.M. in Comparative Law (focus: oil and gas) from the LSU Law Center in 1985, was invited by the LSU Law John P. Laborde Energy Law Center on Thursday, September 11th, 2014 to give a presentation on the possible outcomes of the Scottish Independence Referendum and its potential implications on the European Union, the U.S.A. and the oil and gas industry. Mr. Vass is a Partner in the Oil and Gas division of Bond Dickinson.

Hugh Vass is qualified as a Scots solicitor and Louisiana attorney who practiced in Louisiana, Venezuela, and Brazil. Mr. Vass has an extensive experience in the oil industry and has been recently very active in Africa in jurisdictions such as Morocco, Gambia, Senegal, Nigeria and Uganda. He has considerable expertise on the legal issues regarding the United Kingdom Continental Shelf and is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.  Mr. Vass stated at the beginning of his presentation that he would not be where he is today without the knowledge he gained during his study at the Law Center, and specifically thanked Prof. Patrick Martin, his thesis advisor, for his assistance and guidance.

The LSU Law Center and LL.M. Program is proud to count such an outstanding lawyer and scholar as one of its own, and warmly thanks Mr. Vass for his extremely interesting presentation. It was a great success among students and professors at the law center.
