An Introduction to French Law, Taught in French, Spring 2014

Law Students and Graduate Students of French: Prof. Olivier Moréteau will teach introduction au droit français (Introduction to French Law) in the spring 2014. This course is one credit, with a total of twelve hours, two hours a week, for a period of six or seven weeks at the beginning of the spring semester.  Class will meet Monday and Wednesday from 1:50 – 2:50, beginning on January 13, 2014 through the end of February.

Teaching materials is in French, but very often bilingual or with English support, so that you do not get lost and can make sense out of what you read. We will speak French in class, simply and slowly, but also English at times when you are at a loss. You will learn some French basic legal vocabulary, whilst exploring some fundamental areas of French law, combining a legal and cultural approach: the Constitution and French identity, judicial review by the Conseil constitutionnel and the Conseil d’Etat, the Civil Code with past, present, and future perspectives, the importance of Cour de cassation decisions, protection of privacy, criminal justice in action, evolution of women’s rights… Selected topics avoid high technicality and focus on what is illustrative of French legal culture.

Please contact Prof. Olivier Moréteau (W326C or moreteau@lsu.edu) before final enrollment.
