Students are responsible for arranging their own accommodations in Lyon, but the Program is here to help. We offer several resources below to help students with their housing search. If you have any questions or need any help, please contact lyonprogram@lsu.edu
Step by Step Guide
1. Familiarize yourself with Lyon- Lyon is a big city, but it doesn’t seem that way once you’re there because you’ll mainly be staying in the same part of the city. It’s helpful to get acquainted with Lyon when you’re starting your search for housing.
Find a map of Lyon. The two rivers that run through it, the Rhône and the Saône, roughly divide up the city into three parts. Vieux Lyon is the historic old quarter to the west of the Saône. The Presqu’île is the part located on the peninsula between the rivers. Finally, the Part-Dieu side is the newer part of the city located east of the Rhône.
Most students in the past have stayed close to the school and near the rivers. You won’t want to go too far from this area. Our host university has several campuses, but the one we will use is located at 15 quai Claude Bernard, right on the Rhône River.
When looking for housing, you’ll also want to be familiar with the arrondissements or districts of Lyon. They are numbered from 1 to 9, and usually clearly marked on maps of the city. You will probably want to find a place in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, or 7th districts, but still close to school.
2. What’s your living situation?– You’ll want to decide how many people you’ll be comfortable living with and agree on what kind of place you will be looking.
Generally, more people makes housing more affordable and gives you more options. It also makes the search easier because you can divide up the work.
Join our Facebook page to connect with other students interested in Lyon. You can also use the discussion forums to find roommates and share ideas for housing.
3. What to look for- Remember that European living is going to be a little different from what you’re used to.
Some comforts like air conditioning and clothes dryers will simply not be available in most places in Lyon. You’ll want to inquire about other things like internet access, kitchen, furnishings, weekly cleaning and linen service, etc.
It’s also important to think about location and getting around the city. You’ll want a place that is convenient to walk to and from most places. Consider that you’ll be going to school every morning, but also getting to and from dining and going out in the evening. Also, look for a place with a nearby tram or metro stop to take advantage of Lyon’s excellent public transportation.
4. Search- Some suggested websites to search for housing online:
Urban Séjour- http://www.urbansejour.com/en/home Hotel des Celestines- http://www.hotelcelestins.com/fr/index.htm Hotel la Residence- http://www.hotel-la-residence.com Appart’City- http://www.appartcity.com Craigslist- http://lyon.en.craigslist.org Chambres Lyon- www.chambreslyon.comLes Carrés Pégase- http://lyon.les-carres-pegase.tobook.com

Les Lauréades- http://www.icade-residence-services.com/student-residence.html
Lyon Tourism- http://www.en.lyon-france.com/Residences

5. Book It!- Once you’ve found a place that works, book it fast.
The earlier you do so the better since there are so many people looking for a place to live. Most websites are just listings of available apartments that are individually owned. Once you send your information to the website, they will put you in touch with the actual owner. Most owners will ask you to send a deposit by funds transfer between banks to make the reservation.
